Harrison M. Smith is the founding principal of hms.law, a law firm dedicated to serving the unique needs of churches, nonprofit organizations, and purpose-driven small businesses. With an acute understanding of the legal challenges faced by religious organizations, Harrison provides practical and wise counsel to churches that advance their missions, protect their religious freedom, and manage legal risk. Harrison believes that a strong legal foundation empowers the church to more excellently pursue the Great Commission.

Often serving as outside general counsel, Harrison regularly advises clients on the full complement of legal matters related to faith-based organizations, including employment, corporate governance, tax-exempt status, risk management, internal investigations, succession planning, donation and fundraising, regulatory compliance, IRS audits, real estate, and contracts.

Prior to establishing his firm, Harrison represented corporate and nonprofit entities as employment and trial counsel at nationally recognized law firms. Additionally, following a call into ministry, Harrison served on the staff of two churches while pursuing a master’s degree at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Before practicing law, Mr. Smith earned his B.A. in Speech Communication from Baylor University and a J.D. from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., where he served as an editor of the Howard Law Journal.

Harrison and his wife have been married for eight years. Together, they are the proud parents of three wonderful (and energetic) children and grateful to have loved another. As a family, they love sports and the outdoors, and they are invested in serving their local church and local mission organizations advocating for biblical perspectives related to fatherhood, youth development, and body image.
